In October 2013 I started my own communications consulting and coaching business. While I enjoy the flexibility of managing my own schedule and setting my own hours, I still work quite a bit. I’m just not in an office all day.
But I would often catch myself saying, “When I worked full-time.”
Wait, what? Ugh. That makes it sound like I don’t work that much anymore. It’s like I’m saying that I work part-time or am semi-retired and that’s simply not the case. So now I try and reference that chapter of my life as in-house work. It sounds better and is more accurate.
Words matter, not only to those to hear them, but also to those who utter them. So mind your language because it really can play tricks with your mind.
