I’m not a fan of the phrase, the new normal.
Aside from it feeling hackneyed, it’s also binding. And during a pandemic, we have enough restrictions, don’t we?
If we say that the state we are in is the new normal, we give it permanence, even if it is subconsciously.
There’s nothing normal about this time, nor is it permanent. In fact, if we’ve learned anything from this pandemic it is that nothing is forever. Life as we know it can dramatically alter when swept up by a tornado of circumstances.
When we say something is the new normal, we hand over power to those very circumstances. We concede. And that can leave us with a sense of resignation.
Life is an active state of being, even when we feel inactive while laying in bed with an iPad propped up on our tummy which we just filled with ice cream. Just like that show you are binge watching, this pandemic too will end at some point. So don’t get too comfy and don’t tell yourself that this is the new normal. This is just a plain old test of resilience.
